Metaphor is one of the most underused tools in the therapy room, and yet it's one of the most powerful. A well-crafted story can reach a client's unconscious mind in ways that direct instruction simply cannot. It doesn't argue with resistance. It doesn't ask permission from the conscious, analytical mind. It slips past both, and speaks in a language the subconscious already understands.
This page is a small, growing library of original therapeutic myths and metaphors, free for you to download, print, and use directly in your own practice — whether that's read aloud in session, given to a client to reflect on between appointments, or woven into your own trance work.
Why myth and metaphor work
Clients rarely arrive ready to hear a direct explanation of what's happening beneath their symptoms. A metaphor offers something different: distance. It lets a client explore a difficult truth about themselves through a character, a landscape, a journey — without the defensiveness that can arise when something feels too close, too exposing, too real. By the time the meaning lands, it's often already been absorbed somewhere deeper than conscious resistance can reach.
These aren't decorative stories. Each one has been written with a specific therapeutic function in mind — for patterns like repeating cycles, grief, the inner critic, or the parts of self that get pushed into shadow. They're designed to sit comfortably alongside solution focused, trauma-informed, and hypnotherapeutic approaches, but the underlying principles translate well across many therapeutic modalities.
What you'll find here
To start, you'll find a small selection of sample metaphors and myths, each one usable as a standalone resource. These are genuine working pieces, not stripped-down teasers — you can put them into practice with clients straight away. More will be added here over time as the library grows.
If you find these useful, my complete professional bundles go further still, pairing each myth with a full clinical hypnosis script, a trauma-informed practitioner guide, and a licence agreement for professional use — built for practitioners who want a ready-made, clinically grounded resource rather than starting from a blank page.
How to access them
These resources are free, but do require a quick email sign-up — this simply allows me to send you each new metaphor as it's added, along with occasional practitioner-focused reflections from my own clinical work. You're welcome to unsubscribe at any time; there's no obligation beyond that first sign-up.
Enter your details below to receive your first free metaphor, and access to the growing library as it expands.
Who this is for
This page is built for fellow therapists, counsellors, coaches, and wellbeing practitioners — anyone who works directly with clients and wants another tool in their kit. You don't need to already use metaphor or hypnotherapy in your own work to find these useful; many practitioners simply read a story aloud, or adapt the imagery into their own existing framework.
A note on how they're written
Every metaphor here is written by me, drawing on 18 years of NHS clinical experience and my ongoing personal work in Jungian and depth psychology. Nothing is generated or templated — each one is crafted specifically for the pattern or presentation it addresses.
